A 1981 adventure comedy where fake war loot becomes a real, ironic fortune

The plot thickens when the pirates return with reinforcements, forcing the duo to launch a daring aerial assault using an old plane to secure the island's freedom once and for all. Their heroics eventually lead to their rescue by the crew of the USS Forrestal.
The film’s final twist reveals the true nature of the general's treasure. Upon surrendering the loot to the Navy, the protagonists learn the money is actually genuine; the government had propagated the rumor that it was fake to prevent the Japanese from utilizing it during the war. Despite their contribution to the island's peace, the pair ends up penniless, working as janitors in a museum where a gift from the natives—a hand-made idol—is displayed as a priceless artifact. It is a classic comedic irony: the men who held a fortune are left scrubbing the floors of the institution that now profits from their adventure.
