Before he was a Hollywood star, Ken Jeong was a practicing internal medicine physician.
In short: Ken Jeong’s path to fame is anything but conventional. While he is now a household name in comedy and television, he spent years balancing a medical residency and a career as an internal medicine doctor with his burgeoning life as a stand-up performer before finally transitioning to full-time acting.
Born in Detroit in 1969 to South Korean immigrant parents, Ken Jeong’s early life was marked by academic and extracurricular success in Greensboro, North Carolina. He graduated high school at 16, attended Duke University, and earned his M.D. from the UNC School of Medicine in 1995. During his residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, he won the Big Easy Laff-Off, an achievement that caught the attention of industry veterans who encouraged him to pursue comedy in Los Angeles.
Jeong moved to Los Angeles in 1998, where he maintained a dual life for nearly a decade. He worked as an internal medicine physician at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Woodland Hills while performing at comedy clubs like The Improv and the Laugh Factory. His breakout role came in the 2007 film Knocked Up, where he played Dr. Kuni. This success allowed him to leave medical practice in 2006, though he retains his license and has famously assisted with medical emergencies on-set and during performances.
Since his transition to full-time entertainment, Jeong has built a prolific career spanning film and television. He is well-known for his role as Leslie Chow in The Hangover series and Ben Chang in the sitcom Community. Beyond acting, he has become a fixture in reality television as a panelist on The Masked Singer and the host of I Can See Your Voice. His work has earned him recognition, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award at the 2026 Banff World Media Festival.
Jeong’s career is characterized by his ability to pivot between diverse formats, from writing and producing his own sitcom, Dr. Ken, to voice acting in animated films like Scoob! and KPop Demon Hunters. Despite his departure from clinical medicine, he remains deeply connected to his roots, often using his platform to support the Asian Pacific American community, for which he received the Visionary Award from East West Players.
