In short: From the iconic, gravelly tones of Oogie Boogie to the gentle wisdom of Old Deuteronomy, Ken Page was a titan of the stage and screen. His career spanned decades of Broadway brilliance and beloved animation, leaving an indelible mark on American musical theatre and the hearts of countless fans.

Born in St. Louis in 1954, Kenneth Page’s journey toward the spotlight began in his hometown, where he was inspired by teachers and family to pursue the arts. After graduating from Bishop DuBourg High School in 1972, he attended Fontbonne College on a full scholarship. His professional path started in the chorus of the Muny outdoor theater, a venue he would return to throughout his life to perform in classics like Les Misérables and The Wizard of Oz.

Page’s Broadway career was defined by his ability to inhabit distinct, memorable characters. He made his debut in The Wiz as the Lion and earned a Theatre World Award for his portrayal of Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the 1976 revival of Guys and Dolls. He was also a foundational member of the original cast of Ain't Misbehavin', a Fats Waller revue that earned him a Drama Desk Award. His range extended to the divine, as he famously played God in both Randy Newman’s Faust and the West End production of Children of Eden.

Beyond the stage, Page achieved lasting fame as the voice of the villainous Oogie Boogie in the 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas. He remained deeply committed to the character, reprising the role for decades in various Disney theme park attractions, video games like Kingdom Hearts, and live concert experiences across the globe. His filmography also included roles in All Dogs Go to Heaven and Torch Song Trilogy.

In his later years, Page continued to perform his own cabaret show, Page by Page, and directed regional productions. He passed away in his sleep on September 30, 2024, at age 70. Reflecting on his life and identity in 2012, he emphasized the importance of personal authenticity over rigid labels, advising others to define themselves by their own terms rather than societal expectations.
