In short: Adolph Green and Betty Comden were the creative engine behind some of the most iconic musicals of the twentieth century. From their early days as a struggling comedy troupe in Greenwich Village to their legendary status in Hollywood, they redefined musical comedy through a six-decade collaboration of wit and song.

Born in the Bronx in 1915, Adolph Green spent the Great Depression working as a Wall Street runner while pursuing acting. His life changed in 1938 when he met Betty Comden while making the rounds of theatrical agents. They joined a group called The Revuers, performing satirical songs and skits at the Village Vanguard, a bohemian nightclub in Greenwich Village. This troupe included Judy Tuvim, who later achieved fame as the actress Judy Holliday.

The pair eventually transitioned from performing to writing, forming a partnership that lasted longer than any other in Broadway history. In 1944, they collaborated with Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins on the musical On the Town. While their initial foray into Hollywood was a disappointment, they returned to New York to build a prolific career. They frequently worked with composer Jule Styne on hits like Peter Pan in 1954 and Bells Are Ringing in 1956.

Their influence extended deeply into cinema. They wrote the script for Singin' in the Rain, which the American Film Institute voted the best film musical of all time. Their work earned them seven Tony Awards, including wins for Wonderful Town, Hallelujah, Baby!, Applause, On the Twentieth Century, and The Will Rogers Follies. By the time Green passed away in 2002, they had secured their legacy as masters of the American musical, having been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1980.
