How Kim Hye-soo transitioned from teen idol to South Korea's most sophisticated icon
In short: From a 1985 Nestlé Milo commercial to becoming a powerhouse of Korean cinema, Kim Hye-soo has redefined the female lead. Known for her headstrong independence, she has navigated decades of stardom, evolving from an innocent "nation's first love" into a commanding presence in both film and television.
Kim Hye-soo's career began in the mid-1980s, marked by a 1985 advertisement for Nestlé Milo and her film debut in Ggambo in 1986. While she gained early acclaim, winning Best New Actress at the 23rd Baeksang Arts Awards, her trajectory was not without complexity. In 1993, she earned the title "Nation's First Love" following her role in the film First Love, despite that specific project being a box-office failure.
As her career progressed, Kim intentionally shifted her image. In the 2000s, she moved away from television to focus on film, reinventing herself as a glamorous femme fatale in 2004's Hypnotized. Her role as Madam Jeong in the 2006 crime film Tazza: The High Rollers became one of her most commercially successful performances, securing her a third Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress and cementing her status among the industry's A-list.
Beyond her acting, Kim has demonstrated a commitment to social causes through significant philanthropy. She has donated ₩100 million on multiple occasions to aid victims of the 2019 Goseong Fire, the 2022 Uljin and Samcheok wildfires, the 2022 South Korean floods, and the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake. Her influence extends to the technical side of the industry as well, where she is noted by colleagues for her habit of recommending unknown actors for future roles.
Her career has also faced personal and academic scrutiny. In 2013, Kim admitted to plagiarizing parts of her master's thesis, "A Study on Actor Communication," from at least four books, leading her to forfeit her degree in journalism and mass communications.
