A high-stakes spy thriller where human intelligence meets geopolitical tension
In short: In the gritty landscape of Vladivostok, South and North Korean agents collide. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, this espionage action film explores the dangerous intersection of international crime and intelligence gathering, where a single worker becomes the most valuable—and vulnerable—asset on the border.
Released on February 11, 2026, Humint serves as the final installment in director Ryoo Seung-wan's unofficial 'Overseas Location' trilogy. The series previously included The Berlin File (2013) and Escape from Mogadishu (2021). This latest entry, produced by Filmmaker R&K with a budget of approximately ₩23.5 billion (US$16 million), shifts the setting to the border regions near Vladivostok, Russia. To capture this specific aesthetic, principal photography took place in Riga, Latvia, starting in October 2024.
The narrative follows a complex web of conflicting interests. While monitoring a global criminal network, South Korean National Intelligence Service Manager Zo encounters Park Geon, a North Korean State Security official probing a security violation. The tension is further heightened by Hwang Chi-seong, a North Korean consul general with conflicting personal interests. Chae Seon-hwa, an employee at a North Korean eatery, sits at the heart of the struggle as she turns into a dangerous human intelligence asset for both agencies.
Critical reception for the film has been varied. While Moon Ki-hoon of the Korea Herald described it as a thriller that is 'long on spectacle' but 'short on substance,' Woo Jae-yeon of Yonhap News suggested the film leans toward romance, noting that the action sequences serve to sustain a romantic thread. Despite a Cine 21 average score of 7.00 out of 10, the film faced commercial challenges; although it reached nearly 2 million viewers by April 2026, it fell short of the 4 million admissions required to break even.
