What if organ transplants granted you superhuman abilities?
In short: In the 2025 South Korean fantasy film Hi-Five, a group of transplant recipients discovers they have gained extraordinary powers. From lightning-fast speed to controlling electromagnetic waves, these survivors find themselves caught in a supernatural struggle against a cult leader seeking to harvest even more organs.
Directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol, Hi-Five follows Park Wan-seo, a girl who develops explosive power and lightning-like speed after receiving a heart transplant. Her father, Jong-min, a former Olympic medalist and taekwondo instructor, struggles to protect her from the trauma of her past illness. As Wan-seo discovers her abilities, she meets others like her, including Park Ji-sung, a failed screenwriter whose lung transplant granted him immense lung capacity.
The film explores a wider web of recipients, such as Kim Seon-nyeo, a yogurt seller whose kidney transplant allows her to transfer powers between others, and Hwang Gi-dong, who gained electromagnetic vision through a corneal transplant. These individuals eventually unite to face Yeong-chun, the leader of the Saeshin church. Yeong-chun, who gained the ability to absorb youth via a pancreas transplant, attempts to use his messianic status to perform miracles and harvest more organs.
The production of the film faced significant delays. Although filming took place from 1 June 2021 until 7 November 2021, the film's debut was delayed without a set date once Yoo Ah-in's February 2023 positive tests for marijuana and propofol surfaced. Ultimately, the film was released in South Korea on May 30, 2025, without Yoo's participation in promotions. It became a box office success, surpassing Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning to lead the daily box office upon its release.
