How NBC attempted to revive a classic 1980s action franchise for modern television audiences
In short: In 2008, NBC sought to escape last place in network ratings by reviving the iconic Knight Rider. Featuring a high-tech Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR and a voice performance by Val Kilmer, the series attempted to blend legacy nostalgia with modern action, only to be canceled after a single season.
The 2008 iteration of Knight Rider was born from a strategic push by NBC programmer Ben Silverman, who was tasked by CEO Jeff Zucker to revitalize the network's struggling ratings. The show followed Michael Traceur, the estranged son of the original series' protagonist, who adopts the name Michael Knight II. Produced in partnership with Ford Motor Company, the series centered on a new, artificially intelligent KITT capable of complex transformations, including shifting into a Ford F-150 or a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang for tactical disguises.
The production faced significant turbulence during its short lifespan. Although NBC initially ordered 22 episodes, the network reduced this to 17 on December 3, 2008. By November 2008, producers attempted to pivot the show's tone to better mirror the original 1982 series, which resulted in the departure of several cast members—including Yancey Arias, Bruce Davison, and Sydney Tamiia Poitier—following the conclusion of their thirteen-episode contracts. The show ultimately struggled to find its footing, and NBC announced its cancellation on May 19, 2009.
Technologically, the new KITT was a marvel of fictional engineering, featuring an interior dominated by touch-enabled head-up displays and a pulsing orb voice modulator. Beyond its aesthetic changes, the vehicle was equipped with an array of defensive and offensive weaponry, such as sonic inhibitors, EMP weapons, and laser systems. Despite these high-tech flourishes and the inclusion of a backup mainframe, the series could not sustain its momentum. The final episode aired on March 4, 2009, marking the end of a brief, ambitious experiment in rebooting television history.
