Before the Man of Steel, his grandfather fought to save a doomed planet
In short: Long before Superman was born, his grandfather Seg-El navigated the treacherous politics of a dying world. Developed by David S. Goyer, the science fiction series Krypton explores the House of El's struggle for redemption and the looming threat of an alien android determined to collect cities from their home planet.
Set approximately 200 years before the birth of the iconic superhero Kal-El, the series Krypton centers on Seg-El, a scion of the disgraced House of El. The narrative follows his desperate efforts to restore his family's honor while protecting his world from chaos. The stakes are raised by the arrival of Adam Strange, a human traveler from the future who warns Seg-El about the impending threat of Brainiac, an alien android from the planet Colu known for harvesting entire cities.
The series, which premiered on Syfy in March 2018, features a complex web of political and military factions. Characters like Daron-Vex, the chief magistrate of Kandor, and the military leader Jayna-Zod represent the rigid oligarchy that Seg-El must navigate. The story also delves into the origins of legendary figures and threats, including the creation of the destructive entity Doomsday by scientists Wedna-El and Van-Zod, and the emergence of General Dru-Zod, the future son of Seg-El and Lyta-Zod.
Despite its ambitious scope and the inclusion of iconic DC Comics elements, the show's run was relatively brief. Following a ten-episode first season, Syfy renewed the series for a second season, which debuted in June 2019. However, the network ultimately canceled the show in August 2019 after the conclusion of its second ten-episode season. The production, which began development under David S. Goyer in 2014, remains a unique exploration of the history of the House of El and the societal pressures that preceded the eventual destruction of their home world.
