In short: Krang is one of the most enduring villains in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles history. Originally a banished brain stripped of its body, this character has evolved through decades of media into a multi-dimensional threat, shifting from a tech-reliant strategist to a bio-organic hive mind capable of possessing entire armies.

Krang first appeared in the 1988 comic 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures' and became a staple of the 1987 animated series. During that version, the reptilian being Krang originated from Dimension X had his physical shell removed, leaving him as a brain-like entity. To interact with Earth, he was forced to use small android walkers or platforms, eventually partnering with Shredder to build a human-shaped exo-suit. His primary objective was to power up the Technodrome, a mobile battle fortress, to conquer Earth.

The character's nature varies wildly across different continuities. In the 2012 series, he is known as Kraang Prime, a deranged Utrom who used a mutagen to enslave his own species into a subservient hive mind called the Kraang. Conversely, the 'Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' series reimagines the species as ancient invaders who brought a mutagen called Empyrean to Earth, creating the Yōkai race and gifting the Foot Clan with cursed armor.

In the IDW comics, Krang's backstory is even more complex: he is the heir of Quanin, a former Prime Minister who turned the Utrom domain into an empire. Krang fled his home after his father's expansionism destroyed their planet, Utrominon. He sought to 'xenoform' Earth into a new home for his survivors. This evolution from a simple 'brain in a jar' to a tragic, genocidal refugee highlights the franchise's ability to reinvent a classic villain while maintaining his core identity as a relentless conqueror.
