A mutant nation that conquered death by rewriting history
In short: In 2019, Marvel Comics launched a radical relaunch of the X-Men, establishing a sovereign mutant nation called Krakoa. This wasn't just a new setting; it was a geopolitical shift where mutants gained the power to resurrect the dead, all while navigating a complex web of past, present, and future timelines.
The 'House of X' and 'Powers of X' miniseries, written by Jonathan Hickman, served as the catalyst for the 'Krakoan Age.' This era fundamentally restructured the X-Men mythos by establishing Krakoa as a sovereign nation. Central to this new status quo was the ability to defeat death: a group of five mutants known as 'The Five' could combine their powers to revive deceased mutants, who then entered the nation as 'Heroes of Krakoa.'
However, the foundation of this nation is built on a complex, non-linear narrative involving Moira MacTaggert. Revealed to be a mutant who can be reborn with her memories intact, MacTaggert has lived through approximately 10 to 11 different timelines. The series explores these histories—ranging from a hundred years in the future where mutants fight a 'Man Machine Supremacy' to a thousand years in the future where 'post-humanity' faces assimilation by the Phalanx. These visions of the future, often involving the destruction of Earth, serve as a grim warning that informs the present-day actions of leaders like Charles Xavier and Magneto.
The narrative also highlights the external pressures on this new mutant society. The human organization 'Orchis'—a coalition including members from A.I.M., S.H.I.E.L.D., and Hydra—seeks to prevent the extinction of humanity. To counter this, Xavier and Magneto engaged in high-stakes diplomacy and clandestine operations, including the creation of a unique mutant language and a database of mutant DNA. Ultimately, the series depicts a desperate, proactive stance: by establishing Krakoa, the X-Men aim to break a cycle of defeat that MacTaggert’s memories suggest is inevitable.
