Why did Sony's big-budget Kraven the Hunter film fail to capture its audience?
In short: Released in December 2024, Kraven the Hunter was intended to be a centerpiece of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Despite a high-profile cast and significant production investment, the film struggled to find its footing, ultimately becoming a box-office disappointment that left critics and audiences largely unimpressed by its narrative and execution.
Development of the film began in mid-2017 as part of Sony's strategy to build a shared universe around Spider-Man properties. The project faced a long road to the screen, with multiple writers and directors considered before J.C. Chandor was confirmed in 2021. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was cast as the titular hunter, a role he described as an apex predator and conservationist. The film's production budget was initially set at $90 million, but costs rose to between $110 million and $130 million due to delays caused by the 2023 writers and actors strikes.
The story follows Sergei Kravinoff, who gains animalistic abilities after a near-death experience in Ghana. He returns to Russia to operate as a vigilante before being drawn into a conflict involving his estranged father, Nikolai, and his half-brother, Dmitri. The film features various comic book characters, including the Rhino and the Foreigner, but it ultimately failed to resonate with viewers. Upon its release on December 13, 2024, the film grossed only $62 million worldwide, leading to an estimated loss of $71 million for the studio.
Critical reception was overwhelmingly negative, with the film holding a 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 35 out of 100 on Metacritic. Reviewers criticized the rote storytelling and special effects, while audiences gave it a 'C' grade on CinemaScore. Despite its theatrical struggles, the film found a second life on streaming platforms, accumulating 3.67 billion minutes viewed on Netflix in 2025, ranking it ninth among the most-streamed films for general audiences that year.
