In short: Directed by Rakesh Roshan, Koyla follows a loyal, mute servant who discovers his master is the architect of his tragic past. After a brutal betrayal, he embarks on a quest for justice and love. This intense revenge saga marked a technical milestone as the first Indian film to feature DTS surround sound.

Released on 18 April 1997, Koyla tells the story of Shankar, a mute man raised as a slave by the ruthless Raja. The narrative takes a dark turn when Raja attempts to marry a villager named Gauri through deception. After Gauri discovers the truth, she and Shankar flee, leading to a violent confrontation that reveals Raja murdered Shankar's parents to steal their wealth and silenced the boy by shoving hot coals into his throat.

The film’s production was marked by both ambition and physical hardship. Principal photography began in June 1996, with locations ranging from the Nuranang Falls in Arunachal Pradesh to Hyderabad and Ooty. During the filming of the song Ghungte Mein Chanda, lead actor Shah Rukh Khan suffered a leg fracture, which nearly forced the removal of another musical sequence, Dekha Tujhe Toh, until his recovery allowed for its completion.

Financially, the film was an average grosser, earning a worldwide total of ₹28.05 crore against a budget of ₹12 crore. Despite its mixed reception, it set records at the time for its opening day and weekend collections. Beyond its box-office performance, the film remains notable for its soundtrack, which sold approximately 1.8 million units, and for Amrish Puri’s performance as the villain, which earned him a nomination for a Filmfare Award.

The film serves as a quintessential example of 1990s Indian action cinema, blending themes of feudal oppression, hidden identities, and ultimate retribution. By the conclusion, Shankar regains his voice through a medical procedure and exposes Raja’s crimes to the mine workers, culminating in a dramatic final confrontation where he exacts his revenge, bringing a definitive end to his master's reign of terror.
