In short: Unlike the polished, structured evil of Darth Vader, Kylo Ren was designed to be unpolished and erratic. He was a radicalized extremist whose jagged lightsaber and wild temper served as a metaphor for his internal instability. This complex character was built to be a human journey of emotion rather than a simple villain.

Kylo Ren was born Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa. While trained as a Jedi by his uncle Luke Skywalker, he was seduced to the dark side by Supreme Leader Snoke. Driven by a frantic, near-fixated urge, he sought to match the might of the Sith Lord Darth Vader, his grandfather. This obsession led him to adopt the persona of Vader to "haunt" Luke, though his internal state remained far more unstable than his predecessor's.

The character's design and behavior were intentionally "unpolished." Director J.J. Unlike the "order and structure" typically associated with the Dark Side, Ren was a "hot-headed, radicalised dark side extremist." He was not a "mustache-twirling bad guy" but a complex figure whose actions were driven by intense, often "naked" and "unhealthy" emotions.

Ren's story depicts a 'path of a person entirely unlike Darth Vader.' Whereas Vader participated in mass murder, Ren's trajectory involves a boy maturing into adulthood while wrestling with his beliefs. This culminated in a "Force dyad" connection with Rey—described as "twins of fate"—where he eventually rejected the dark side. In the final moments of The Rise of Skywalker, Ben Solo sacrificed his life force to revive Rey, choosing to renounce his lightsaber and his identity as Ren to die as Ben Solo once more.

The character's development was a collaborative effort involving various creators. While the films focused on his rise as an enforcer and Supreme Leader, a prequel graphic novel by Marvel Comics further elaborated on his backstory. His performance by Adam Driver was noted for its "method" approach, where the actor often remained in character on set to maintain the reality of a universe where "Darth Vader is real."
