The series primarily documents the football program at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), one of the country's most successful junior college (JUCO) programs. The narrative centers on a 'last chance' theme, focusing on athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds who lack structure and must navigate academic requirements to graduate on time while competing for a spot in major college athletics. This journey is overseen by head coach Buddy Stephens, whose leadership style is characterized by a struggle to control his temper alongside a devout Christian faith.
The production has moved across different locations to capture various dynamics of the JUCO experience. While the first two seasons focused on the dominant EMCC Lions, the third and fourth seasons moved to Independence Community College in Kansas. This shift highlighted a different reality: ICC had historically lower expectations, recording its first winning season in ten years in 2016. The fourth season at Independence ultimately saw the team finish 2–8 and led to the resignation of Coach Brown due to insensitive remarks.
The series gained significant critical acclaim, earning a 79 on Metacritic and a 2020 Emmy Award for Outstanding Serialized Sports Documentary. Its success led to a spin-off, Last Chance U: Basketball, which premiered in March 2021. That series follows the basketball program at East Los Angeles College under coach John Mosley. The basketball team reached a program-best 29–1 record during the 2019–20 season before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
