In short: In this 2009 comedy-drama, a former Bolshoi Theatre conductor turned janitor orchestrates a daring plan to reclaim his lost legacy. He gathers his old, marginalized musicians to perform in Paris, aiming to complete a Tchaikovsky concerto that was violently silenced by Soviet authorities thirty years earlier.

Andrey Simonovich Filipov, once a world-renowned conductor, saw his career destroyed by Leonid Brezhnev for his defense of Jewish musicians. Reduced to working as a janitor, Filipov intercepts an invitation meant for the Bolshoi Theatre to perform at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. He seizes the opportunity to assemble a ragtag orchestra of former Jewish and Gypsy musicians, many of whom have spent decades working menial jobs as movers or taxi drivers.

The scheme involves enlisting Ivan Gavrilov, the former KGB agent who originally halted the orchestra's performance in Moscow. The group faces immense pressure, including the requirement to feature Anne-Marie Jacquet as the violin soloist. Anne-Marie, who has never performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto due to deep-seated fear, is unaware that the music holds the key to her own tragic history. Her parents, Lea and Yitzhak Strum, were the original soloists who were deported to Siberia after speaking out against the regime on Radio Free Europe.

The production is marked by chaos, as the musicians disappear into Paris to find work and the orchestra fails to hold a single rehearsal. Yet, when they finally take the stage, the performance transcends their lack of preparation. Guided by Anne-Marie’s mastery of her mother’s annotated score, the orchestra achieves a moment of spontaneous harmony. The success of the concert allows Filipov to relaunch his career, leading to a world tour alongside Anne-Marie and the newly formed Andreï Filipov Orchestra.
