How a childhood injury shifted a future football star toward global stardom
In short: Before he was a hallyu icon, Lee Min-ho was a promising football prospect. An injury in fifth grade ended his athletic aspirations, forcing a pivot that would eventually lead him to become the first Korean celebrity honored with a Madame Tussauds wax figure.
Born on June 22, 1987, in Seoul, Lee Min-ho's path to stardom was far from certain. During his childhood, he aspired to become a professional footballer and was even selected for a junior football class managed by former professional player Cha Bum-kun. However, a serious injury during fifth grade ended those dreams, leading him to turn toward acting and modeling by his first year at Danggok High School. While studying at Namseong Elementary School, he was part of a specialised junior football class. After his injury, he eventually enrolled at Konkuk University to study Film Arts.
His professional journey was marked by significant hurdles, including a serious car accident in 2006 that left him bedridden for several months. Despite this, he achieved a massive breakthrough in 2009 with the television series Boys Over Flowers. This role as Gu Jun-pyo not only earned him a Baeksang Arts Award for Best New Actor but also established him as a leading figure of the Korean Wave, or hallyu. The accident occurred while he was travelling in a vehicle with fellow actor Jung Il-woo. This breakthrough role was an adaptation of a popular shōjo manga.
Lee's influence has extended into massive digital and physical presence. He became the inaugural Korean star to receive a wax likeness, which debuted in Shanghai during 2013 and Hong Kong throughout 2014. Today, he is often referred to as the 'King of Social Media,' boasting a combined total of 65 million followers across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Weibo, and Twitter. His recent work includes a highly acclaimed Hollywood debut in the 2022 Apple TV+ series Pachinko. His international reach is evidenced by his role as Koh Hansu in the period drama Pachinko. He also serves as a prominent brand ambassador for various global luxury and lifestyle labels.
