How a chance dinner invitation turned a naval engineer into a Bond villainess
In short: Before she was a face of 1960s cinema, Luciana Paluzzi was studying naval engineering in Milan. Her transition from engineering student to international star began with a single uncredited role, secured by reciting a single line of English to a director looking for a specific look.
Born in Rome on June 10, 1937, Paluzzi’s path to stardom was far from certain. Before entering the film industry, she spent two years studying naval engineering at the Scientific Academy of Milan, where she was the only woman in her class. Her entry into acting was purely accidental; a friend of her father invited a director, Jean Negulesco, to dinner, and the director happened to be searching for a young actress for a brief role in Three Coins in the Fountain (1954). Paluzzi, who had no intention of becoming an actress, secured the part by reciting her only English line the following day.
While she initially sought roles in Hollywood, including a short-lived contract with Twentieth Century Fox Television for the series Five Fingers in 1959, Paluzzi found her most lasting fame in the mid-1960s. In 1965, she was cast as the SPECTRE assassin Fiona Volpe in Terence Young's Thunderball. Interestingly, she had originally auditioned for the lead Bond girl, Domino, but was instead offered the role of Volpe—a character originally intended to be Fiona Kelly. Paluzzi later noted that playing the villain was actually more enjoyable than the lead role.
However, the fame brought by the James Bond franchise was a double-edged sword. While she gained immense international recognition and publicity from Thunderball, Paluzzi later expressed that being part of such an outlandish film made it difficult for her to be taken seriously as a serious actress when she returned to the Italian film industry. Her career eventually transitioned away from the screen following her 1979 marriage to American media mogul Michael Jay Solomon, leading her to take a quiet role as a sales representative for Canale 5 and it:Reteitalia in the United States.
