In short: Originally conceived as a five-episode streaming series for Disney+, Moana 2 underwent a rapid, high-stakes pivot into a feature film. This decision, driven by executive confidence in early footage, turned the project into a global success, grossing over $1 billion and setting new records for Disney animation trailer viewership.

The journey of Moana 2 began in December 2020, when Jennifer Lee announced a musical comedy series for Disney+. Development proceeded with David Derrick Jr. as director, while the production team worked on revisions. By early 2024, however, Disney executives, including Alan Bergman, pushed for a shift to the big screen. This transition was logistically feasible because the bulk of animation work for Disney features typically occurs in the final year of production, allowing the team to repurpose the existing development work into a theatrical sequel.

The film’s production marked a significant shift in Disney’s operations. It was the first feature film produced at the studio’s new Vancouver facility, a move that sparked controversy; a report from The Animation Guild estimated that the shift resulted in the loss of 817 jobs and $178 million in state gross domestic product for California. Despite these internal changes, the creative team sought to evolve the character of Moana. Auliʻi Cravalho noted that this was the first time a Disney princess was permitted to age, allowing her to record lines at age 19 with her natural voice rather than the higher pitch required for her teenage portrayal in the 2016 original.

Musically, the film introduced a new songwriting duo, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who replaced Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda, who was busy with Encanto and Mufasa: The Lion King, was unavailable for the project. Barlow and Bear, recruited in 2021, became the first all-female songwriting duo for a Disney film. Their work, alongside the return of composers Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, aimed to deepen the emotional resonance of the story. Upon its release in November 2024, the film became the third highest-grossing movie of the year, proving the commercial viability of the studio's last-minute strategic pivot.
