In short: Irish actor Lorcan Cranitch has become a staple of British drama, moving from the halls of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to iconic roles in series like Cracker and Bloodlands. His career spans high-profile BBC productions, HBO epics, and collaborations with some of cinema's most legendary names.

Born in Dublin, Lorcan Cranitch began his journey into the world of drama while still a student. After attending secondary school at Terenure College, he moved to London in 1980 to undergo professional training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His television career began in 1991 with the BBC drama Parnell and the Englishwoman, where he portrayed Tim Healy.

Cranitch achieved significant recognition through his recurring role as the troubled DS Jimmy Beck in the series Cracker between 1993 and 1995. This performance helped establish him as a familiar face to audiences. He later returned to the BBC for a recurring role in Ballykissangel, playing Sean Dillon, a character specifically written for him. His versatility was further demonstrated in 2005 when he played the villainous underworld baron Erastes Fulmen in the HBO/BBC production Rome.

Beyond crime procedurals, Cranitch has navigated diverse genres and high-profile casts. He appeared in the 2009 BBC drama Best: His Mother's Son as Dickie Best, the father of footballer George Best, and has shared the screen with stars such as Meryl Streep in Dancing at Lughnasa. In 2021, he starred as Detective Chief Superintendent Jackie Twomey within the BBC's Bloodlands, and will appear in the Northern Irish police drama Blue Lights starting November 2025.

His stage presence is equally notable, with credits at major institutions including The Royal National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and Dublin's Abbey and The Gate Theatre. In his personal life, Cranitch married RTÉ journalist Susan Jackson; the couple adopted an Ethiopian child in 2010 before separating in 2016.
