The voice behind the characters you didn't know you knew
In short: From the butler Jeeves to the villainous Nergal, Martin Jarvis has become a ubiquitous presence in British media. Whether through radio dramas, animated series, or blockbuster video games, his versatile vocal range has made him one of the most distinguished actors in the industry.
Martin Jarvis, OBE, has built a career defined by extraordinary vocal flexibility. While he is a distinguished stage and screen actor, he is perhaps most recognized for his extensive work in audiobooks and radio. His ability to inhabit diverse characters has led to him being satirized on the radio show Dead Ringers due to his seemingly constant presence on BBC Radio 4.
His voice has traveled through various media, from the 1965 science fiction series Doctor Who to modern video game franchises. He provided the voice for Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman: Arkham series, spanning from 2011's Batman: Arkham City to the 2024 VR title Batman: Arkham Shadow. He also voiced Admiral Zaal'Koris vas Qwib Qwib in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.
Beyond character voices, Jarvis is a celebrated narrator. He has won an Audie Award for his audiobook performances, which include works by P. G. Wodehouse and Oscar Wilde. His theatrical range is further evidenced by his Broadway performance as Jeeves in the musical By Jeeves, a role for which he received a Theatre World Award in 2001.
In addition to his solo work, Jarvis often collaborates with his wife, Rosalind Ayres. Together, they run Jarvis & Ayres Productions, a radio production company frequently utilized by BBC Radio 4. Their professional partnership has seen them appear together in various audio dramas, including Doctor Who spin-offs and the BBC soap opera Doctors.
