Why a high-concept space drama failed to launch with both critics and audiences
In short: Noah Hawley’s directorial debut, Lucy in the Sky, promised a transcendent look at an astronaut’s psychological unraveling. Despite a committed performance by Natalie Portman, the film struggled to find its identity, resulting in a box-office disappointment that left both the studio and the director questioning the final product.
The film, which premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, was originally conceived as a black comedy starring Reese Witherspoon under the title Pale Blue Dot. By the time Noah Hawley took over as director in 2018, the project had shifted toward a magic realism approach. This tonal disconnect became a central point of contention; Hawley later noted that the studio expected a different film than the one he delivered, leaving them unsure how to market the final product.
Loosely inspired by the life of real-life NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak, the narrative follows Lucy Cola, who returns from space feeling profoundly disconnected from Earth. Her subsequent descent into erratic behavior, fueled by professional rivalry and personal betrayal, leads to a dramatic confrontation. However, the film faced significant pushback from the space community. Retired astronaut Marsha Ivins, who completed five missions, explicitly rejected the film's core premise that space travel causes astronauts to lose their grip on reality.
Critics were largely unimpressed, citing issues with the film's writing, pacing, and character development. While Natalie Portman received praise for her performance, the film holds a 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 out of 100 score on Metacritic. The theatrical release was equally difficult, with an opening weekend gross of $55,000 across 37 theaters—a performance widely labeled as terrible. Despite its commercial and critical struggles, the film did earn three nominations at the 46th Saturn Awards, including nods for Best Science Fiction Film and Best Actress.
The film’s legacy is also marked by what it omitted. Media outlets frequently noted the absence of the more sensational details from the Lisa Nowak case, such as the alleged use of adult diapers during her cross-country journey. Ultimately, the film serves as a case study in the friction between creative vision and studio expectations, resulting in a project that failed to resonate with the public.
