A sci-fi odyssey born from corporate shifts and David Bowie's shadow
In short: The journey of an alien landing on Earth is a saga of production hurdles. From being caught in the crossfire of Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox to navigating the legacy of a 1976 film icon, this series reflects the complex machinery behind modern prestige television.
The television adaptation of Walter Tevis's 1963 novel underwent a turbulent development cycle before reaching screens. Originally slated for Hulu, the project was moved to CBS All Access in August 2019 after Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox led to unresolved co-production disagreements. It eventually found its home on Showtime, debuting on April 24, 2022, following a brief screening at SXSW earlier that year. The production team included creators Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman. The project spent more than a year in development at its first studio.
The series serves as a sequel to the 1976 film starring David Bowie, yet it carves out its own identity by casting Chiwetel Ejiofor as the alien Faraday. To honor its cinematic predecessor while establishing new ground, the production cast Bill Nighy in the role of Thomas Jerome Newton—the character originally portrayed by Bowie. The show further weaves cultural threads into its narrative by naming each individual episode after a David Bowie song. Naomie Harris joined the cast alongside Jimmi Simpson and Clarke Peters. Other actors like Rob Delaney and Sonya Cassidy also appeared.
Despite critical acclaim, including an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 'generally favorable' score from Metacritic, the series was canceled after one season. While it successfully translated Tevis's source material into a high-budget production—filming significantly at the University of Hertfordshire—it remains a notable example of how corporate restructuring and the weight of cinematic legacy can shape the lifespan of modern science fiction. The series received an average rating of 6.7 out of 10 from thirty critics. It premiered internationally on Paramount+ while airing on Showtime domestically.
