A box-office failure in America that became a global cult classic
In short: Mackenna's Gold was a 1969 Western that flopped in North America but found massive success abroad. Behind its production lies a chaotic story involving a young George Lucas, a budget that ballooned to seven million dollars, and a theme song that unexpectedly became a running gag on late-night television.
Produced by Carl Foreman and directed by J. Lee Thompson, Mackenna's Gold was intended to be a major American Western. Despite an ensemble cast including Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif, the film struggled from its inception. Initial plans to shoot in Spain were abandoned in favor of American locations like the Grand Canyon, causing the budget to rise from an estimated $2.2 million to $7 million. Even then, the film faced casting hurdles; Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton both rejected the lead role, with Burton famously dismissing the script as rubbish.
The production was marked by technical ambition and eventual compromise. Shot primarily in 65mm stock, the film was originally intended for a three-hour roadshow release. However, Columbia Pictures intervened, cutting the film down to just over two hours before its 1969 debut. The film's visual logic was also loose; while the plot hinges on the sun's position at dawn to reveal a hidden canyon, the film's climactic shadow movements defy actual physics. The production even utilized stock footage of a waterfall in England to fill gaps in the narrative.
Perhaps the most enduring legacy of the film is its unexpected cultural footprint. During production, Foreman invited four film students to document the process, including a young George Lucas. Lucas, who found the project wasteful, created a short film that Foreman reportedly disliked but was forced to praise publicly. Decades later, the film's theme song, 'Old Turkey Buzzard'—composed by Quincy Jones with lyrics by Foreman—gained a second life as a recurring, mock-irritated gag on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2007, culminating in a live performance by singer José Feliciano.
The film's narrative, based on a novel by Heck Allen, centers on the legend of the 'Lost Adams Diggings.' While it failed to capture the American audience, its themes of greed and corruption resonated deeply in the Soviet Union and the Indian subcontinent, cementing its status as an unlikely international success story.
