From a small Milwaukee brewery to a global corporate chess piece in beer
In short: Founded in 1855 with a unique yeast strain, the Miller Brewing Company evolved from a family-run enterprise into a massive asset traded between conglomerates. Its history reflects the shifting landscape of the American beer industry, marked by high-stakes acquisitions, intense marketing, and a long-standing presence in professional motorsports.
Frederick Miller established the company in Milwaukee in 1855 after emigrating from Germany. He purchased the Plank Road Brewery for $2,300, leveraging the location's proximity to local farms for raw materials. The business remained in the Miller family for over a century until 1966, when it was sold to W. R. Grace and Company. This marked the beginning of a complex corporate journey, as the brand was subsequently acquired by Philip Morris in 1969 for $130 million.
The company's scale grew significantly through strategic acquisitions and joint ventures. In 2002, South African Breweries purchased Miller for $5.6 billion in stock and debt, creating SABMiller. By 2008, SABMiller formed MillerCoors with Molson Coors to consolidate U.S. operations. This structure shifted again in 2016 when Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired SABMiller for $107 billion, leading to the divestment of Miller brands in the U.S. to Molson Coors for approximately $12 billion.
Beyond brewing, Miller became a cultural fixture through aggressive marketing and sponsorship. Its oldest brand, Miller High Life, introduced in 1903, earned the nickname 'The Champagne of Beers' due to its carbonation. The company also became a dominant force in motorsports, sponsoring iconic drivers like Bobby Allison and Rusty Wallace in NASCAR, and Arie Luyendyk, who won the 1997 Indianapolis 500. From naming rights at Miller Park to niche seasonal offerings like the Frederick Miller Classic Chocolate Lager, the company has consistently sought to maintain relevance in a competitive market.
