How a stage musical transformed into a 2022 cinematic spectacle of rebellion and magic
In short: The 2022 film adaptation of Matilda the Musical brings Roald Dahl’s classic story to life through dazzling choreography and a powerhouse performance by Emma Thompson. Directed by Matthew Warchus, this musical fantasy reimagines the tale of a gifted, neglected girl who discovers her telekinetic powers to fight back against injustice.
The journey to the screen began in November 2013, when director Matthew Warchus and writer Dennis Kelly were first attached to adapt their successful stage musical. The project evolved over several years, with Tim Minchin returning to compose new songs and Christopher Nightingale providing the incidental score. Production, originally slated for 2020, was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic until May 2021, with filming taking place at Shepperton Studios and various locations across England and Ireland.
Casting choices shifted significantly during development. While Ralph Fiennes was initially reported for the role of the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull—a character traditionally played by men on stage—the role ultimately went to Emma Thompson. Alisha Weir was cast as Matilda after an unforgettable audition, joined by Lashana Lynch as the kind-hearted Miss Honey. The production also featured a massive ensemble of over 200 children, whose choreography, particularly in the sequence for the song 'Revolting Children,' drew praise for its parkour-inspired energy.
Upon its release in late 2022, the film found immediate success, topping the United Kingdom box office for three consecutive weeks. Critics largely lauded the adaptation, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 93% positive rating. Reviewers highlighted the film's 'bedrock of naughtiness' and Thompson's deranged portrayal of Trunchbull. Beyond its theatrical run, the film performed strongly on streaming platforms, accumulating 81 million hours watched on Netflix by June 2023, cementing its place as a modern reimagining of a beloved literary classic.
