A hitman with early-onset Alzheimer's struggles to maintain his moral code in Memory.
In short: In the 2022 action thriller Memory, Liam Neeson portrays a contract killer whose precision is compromised by a fading memory. Tasked with a hit that clashes with his personal ethics, he finds himself hunted by both the law and his former employers while fighting his own deteriorating mind.
Directed by Martin Campbell, Memory is a remake of the Belgian film De Zaak Alzheimer, which was based on the novel by Jef Geeraerts. The narrative follows Alex Lewis, an assassin operating in Mexico who suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's disease. His mission to eliminate a target in El Paso, Texas, takes a turn when he discovers his next assignment involves a child, a line he refuses to cross. This decision forces him into a dangerous confrontation with his handler, Davana Sealman, and her criminal network.
The film weaves in the perspective of Vincent Serra, an FBI agent struggling with the limitations of his own investigations into child trafficking. As Alex attempts to dismantle the organization responsible for the abuse he uncovered, his cognitive decline accelerates. He leaves cryptic clues for the authorities, including a misspelling that eventually leads investigators to the location of critical evidence. The plot culminates in a desperate struggle for justice, complicated by the protagonist's inability to recall the very details needed to secure a conviction.
Despite the pedigree of its star and director, the film received a mixed reception. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 29% approval rating, with many noting it felt like a lesser version of previous collaborations between Neeson and Campbell. However, some reviewers, such as Richard Roeper, found it to be a more elevated experience than typical B-movie fare. The film struggled at the box office, grossing $14 million worldwide against its theatrical run, which began in April 2022.
