How a high-stakes gamble on an unfinished script created a blockbuster time-travel hit
In short: Men in Black 3 began filming in 2010 without a finished second or third act. Director Barry Sonnenfeld called the risky production strategy either genius or stupid, depending on the outcome. The result was a surprise critical success that outperformed its predecessor and became the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
The development of Men in Black 3 was a long, complex process that originated from a premise suggested by Will Smith to director Barry Sonnenfeld during the filming of the second installment in 2002. Despite rumors of past friction between the two, they reunited for the project alongside Tommy Lee Jones. The production was marked by significant challenges, including the difficulty of navigating the logic of time travel and the need for multiple screenwriters. Etan Cohen wrote the original screenplay, which later underwent uncredited rewrites by David Koepp and Jeff Nathanson.
Principal photography commenced in November 2010 in New York City, largely to leverage a 30 percent state tax rebate. The filmmakers famously started shooting without a completed script, a decision Sonnenfeld acknowledged was a massive gamble. Filming was split into two distinct phases, concluding in June 2011. To maintain the aesthetic continuity of the franchise, special effects artist Rick Baker returned to create practical aliens, intentionally designing 'retro' creatures for the 1969 sequences to evoke the style of classic science fiction B movies.
Upon its release in May 2012, the film earned $654.2 million worldwide, securing its place as the highest-grossing entry in the series. Critics generally praised the film, particularly highlighting Josh Brolin’s performance as the younger version of Agent K. While some reviewers noted that the franchise was no longer the pinnacle of blockbuster cinema, many felt the film’s surprising heart and technical execution provided a refreshing, fun experience that exceeded expectations for a third installment.
