In short: The 2002 blockbuster Men in Black II faced a dramatic production shift following the September 11 attacks. Originally filmed against the backdrop of the World Trade Center, the movie's final act required a complete overhaul, moving the climactic confrontation to the Statue of Liberty to respect a changed world.

The production of Men in Black II, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, was already underway when the September 11 attacks occurred in 2001. Principal photography, which began on June 11, 2001, was suspended following the tragedy. The original script, developed by Robert Gordon and later revised by Barry Fanaro, featured the twin towers of the World Trade Center in its climactic scenes. These sequences were deemed inappropriate in the aftermath, forcing the production team to reshoot or edit out views of the towers and relocate the finale to the Statue of Liberty.

Beyond the logistical challenges, the film's creative direction was a subject of internal debate. Sonnenfeld expressed concern over the studio's emphasis on a romantic subplot between Agent J, played by Will Smith, and Laura Vasquez, played by Rosario Dawson. Drawing on his experience with Wild Wild West, the director worried that placing Smith in a straight-man role until Tommy Lee Jones’s character returned would undermine the film's comedic dynamic. Consequently, Fanaro was brought in to condense the opening and accelerate the reintroduction of Agent K.

Despite these hurdles, the film achieved significant commercial success. It premiered on June 26, 2002, and saw a wide theatrical release on July 3, 2002. It grossed $445 million worldwide, securing its place as the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2002. While critics offered mixed reviews, often comparing it unfavorably to the 1997 original, they consistently praised the performances of Smith and Jones. The film also holds a unique place in pop culture for featuring the final feature film appearance of Michael Jackson, who insisted on appearing in the iconic MIB suit rather than as an alien cameo.
