In short: When a Michelin-prize chef is transported back in time to the Joseon era, she must trade her modern kitchen for the royal court. Tasked with feeding a traumatized, tyrannical king, she navigates deadly palace intrigue and historical purges, all while deciding whether to alter the past or return home.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is a 2025 South Korean fantasy series that blends culinary artistry with high-stakes historical drama. The story follows Yeon Ji-yeong, a modern chef who, immediately after winning a prestigious French cuisine award, is swept into the Joseon dynasty during a solar eclipse. She finds herself in the court of King Lee Heon, a monarch defined by his dual reputation as a refined gourmet and a ruthless tyrant. Mistaken for a supernatural threat, Ji-yeong secures her survival by impressing the king with innovative dishes that evoke his lost childhood comfort.

The narrative is deeply rooted in political tension. Ji-yeong must navigate the machinations of the villainous consort Kang Mok-ju and the power-hungry Prince Je Seon, who seeks to usurp the throne. As she gains the king's trust, she faces a profound moral dilemma: should she use her influence to prevent the Gapsin Purge—a catastrophic event involving the king's execution of officials and his eventual deposition—or focus on finding a way back to her life in 2025? The series, directed by Jang Tae-yoo, draws inspiration from the reign of King Yeonsangun and the historical Kapja Sahwa purge of 1504.

The production faced significant hurdles, including a last-minute cast change involving Park Sung-hoon, before finalizing its lineup in January 2025. Despite these challenges, the show became a global success. Following its August 2025 premiere on tvN and Netflix, it topped charts in 93 countries and regions. By its second week, it recorded 43 million hours watched, eventually becoming a key contributor to Studio Dragon's return to profitability. The show’s impact was so significant that by August 2026, reports emerged of a follow-up series set within the same fictional universe.
