In short: For decades, Gonzo was simply a whatever. In the 1999 film Muppets from Space, he finally sought his true identity among the stars. Yet, the script underwent radical changes before filming, shifting from a meta-commentary on fame to a literal extraterrestrial origin story that nearly looked very different.

Released on July 14, 1999, Muppets from Space was the sixth theatrical Muppet film and the final one produced by the Jim Henson Company before the Disney acquisition in 2004. The plot follows Gonzo as he discovers he is an alien after communicating with cosmic fish, leading to his abduction by a clandestine government agency called C.O.V.N.E.T. While the final film leans into this sci-fi premise, the production was marked by significant creative friction.

Co-writer Joseph Mazzarino revealed that his original draft was intended to be a parody of films like Men in Black, Contact, and Alien. In that version, Gonzo was never meant to be an alien. Instead, extraterrestrials would have mistaken him for the ultimate being after watching The Muppet Show, eventually revealing their true forms while Gonzo remained a whatever. The Jim Henson Company fired the original director, Randal Kleiser, shortly before production began, replacing him with Tim Hill, who opted to remove the parodies to make the film feel more real.

The film also departed from Muppet tradition by eschewing original songs in favor of a classic soul and funk soundtrack. While earlier drafts included original tracks like Ween's Eye 2 the Sky, the final cut featured updated classics, including a version of Flash Light by George Clinton and Pepe the King Prawn. Despite a $24 million budget, the film grossed $22.3 million and received mixed reviews, marking a transitional moment for the franchise as it navigated shifting creative leadership and the departure of veteran performers like Frank Oz, who was unavailable for most of the shoot.
