How a Siberian Gulag and a Master Thief Turned the Muppets Into International Fugitives
In short: In this 2014 crime caper, the Muppets embark on a global tour that serves as a front for a high-stakes heist. While Constantine, a criminal mastermind and Kermit lookalike, orchestrates the chaos, the real Kermit finds himself trapped in a Siberian prison, forced to manage a talent show.
Directed by James Bobin, Muppets Most Wanted serves as the eighth theatrical Muppet film, following the 2011 reboot. The plot hinges on a case of mistaken identity: Constantine, the world's most dangerous criminal, escapes a Siberian Gulag and swaps places with Kermit the Frog. While the Muppets unknowingly tour Europe under the management of Dominic Badguy—Constantine’s accomplice—the impostor uses the concerts as a distraction to steal valuable art and eventually the British Crown Jewels.
The production was a massive undertaking, filming at iconic locations like the Tower of London and Pinewood Studios. To maintain the visual integrity of the characters, the crew utilized blue screens rather than traditional green, as the latter clashed with Kermit’s signature color. The film’s aesthetic was heavily influenced by 1960s and 1970s crime capers, with production designer Eve Stewart and costume designer Rahel Afiley crafting a retro look. Notably, Vivienne Westwood designed Miss Piggy’s wedding gown using fabric made from recycled water bottles.
Upon its March 2014 release, the film received generally positive reviews, though it struggled to match the commercial success of its predecessor. It grossed $80.4 million worldwide against a $50 million budget. Critics praised the humor and the soundtrack, which featured original songs by Bret McKenzie, but some noted that it lacked the magic of the 2011 reboot. Despite the mixed reception, the film remains a testament to the Muppets' enduring appeal, featuring a vast array of celebrity cameos and a self-referential style that acknowledges the inherent difficulty of producing a successful sequel.
