How a pandemic pivot redefined a global toy brand's cinematic history
In short: When a major theatrical release is derailed by a global pandemic, the path to the screen can change overnight. For My Little Pony: A New Generation, this shift didn't just change the venue; it marked a high-stakes transition into a new era of 3D animation and lore.
Originally slated for a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures in September 2021, My Little Pony: A New Generation was diverted to Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it maintained a theatrical presence in several Asian countries, the pivot to streaming was a strategic move by Entertainment One (now Lionsgate Canada), which sold distribution rights to Netflix in February 2021. The film became a massive success on the platform, becoming the most-viewed film on Netflix in October 2021.
The project represented a significant technological and narrative shift for the franchise. Moving away from the 2D computer-animation of previous media, the film was entirely 3D-animated by Boulder Media. This transition was part of the franchise's fifth generation, which was officially confirmed in September 2020. In order to uphold consistency, the creators chose a setting within the fourth iteration's universe, taking place many years later, to uphold existing mythology while presenting a fresh group of people.
The production faced unique hurdles, with 48 animators working remotely. The cast, including Vanessa Hudgens and Kimiko Glenn, also recorded parts remotely. This era of production was characterized by a move toward more anthropomorphic designs, inspired by various previous series. Despite the shift in medium, the film served as a bridge, featuring a 2D-animated prologue with the original 'Mane Six' characters before launching the new narrative of Sunny Starscout and her quest to restore magic.
The film's narrative explores themes of prejudice and unity, following Sunny Starscout as she attempts to reunite earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns. The story highlights a world where magic has been lost and races live in fear of one another, culminating in a climax where characters from different backgrounds must set aside their differences to stop a hostile mob and restore harmony to the land.
