In short: Netflix once relied entirely on external partners like DreamWorks to supply its animated content. By 2018, the streaming giant shifted its strategy, launching an in-house studio that now spans three countries. This evolution from a platform for others to a creative powerhouse has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of digital entertainment.

The journey began in 2013 when Netflix started commissioning original animated projects, though every production was outsourced to third-party studios. This model persisted for years until November 2018, when the company announced a pivot toward internal development. This shift brought projects like Klaus and Kid Cosmic under its own creative umbrella, signaling a move to control the entire production pipeline rather than merely hosting licensed work.

Growth accelerated rapidly through both physical expansion and strategic acquisitions. By 2019, the studio had secured dedicated production facilities in Burbank and Hollywood. A major milestone occurred in July 2022 with the purchase of Animal Logic, an Australian animation and visual-effects house. By January 2024, this acquisition was fully integrated into the company's operations, consolidating various production efforts into the unified entity now known as Netflix Animation Studios.

Leadership has evolved alongside this structural expansion. Following the departure of Melissa Cobb, Karen Toliver took over as vice president of film animation in 2022. By June 2024, Hannah Minghella assumed the role of head of feature animation and live-action family film. In June 2026, the studio further refined its focus when Minghella was named head of Netflix Animation Studios, concentrating exclusively on animation as live-action family responsibilities moved to Kira Goldberg.

Beyond internal production, the studio maintains a commitment to industry development through its partnership with the University of Technology Sydney. This collaboration supports the UTS Animal Logic Academy, ensuring a pipeline for talent and innovation. Today, the studio operates out of Burbank, Sydney, and Vancouver, having produced 18 feature films since the debut of Klaus in November 2019, culminating in the 2025 release of In Your Dreams.
