The creative mind behind Cartoon Network's most macabre animated adventures
In short: From the dark humor of Billy & Mandy to the chaotic energy of Cow and Chicken, Maxwell Atoms has shaped a generation of animation. This versatile artist has transitioned from studio intern to a creator of cult-classic series, weaving together dark comedy and surreal storytelling across major networks.
Adam Maxwell Burton, known professionally as Maxwell Atoms, is a multifaceted American animator, screenwriter, storyboard artist, and voice actor. His career is defined by a distinct ability to blend humor with darker themes, a style most famously realized in his work for Cartoon Network. He gained fame for producing Grim & Evil, a series that later yielded popular spin-offs like Evil Con Carne and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. His work often features a dark, surrealist edge that resonated deeply with audiences, earning him a Daytime Emmy Award in 2007 for Children's Programming for his work on Billy & Mandy.
Before achieving solo success, Atoms built a foundation through various industry roles. He attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and gained experience as an intern at Film Roman. His professional journey included stints as a freelance artist at Warner Bros., a brief period at WildBrain, and work on The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat. He also contributed significantly to Hanna-Barbera, serving as a story and storyboard artist on shows like Cow and Chicken and I Am Weasel. His talent for storyboarding was recognized early on, earning an Annie nomination in 1998 for the Cow & Chicken episode "The Karate Chick."
Beyond his television success, Atoms has ventured into the digital space and voice acting. In 2012, he began developing Dead Meat, a black comedy and buddy action web series. Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013, the project was eventually shelved indefinitely in 2020 due to contractual issues and high costs. Atoms' collaborative spirit is evident in his friendships with other creators like Mr. Warburton and C. H. Greenblatt, leading to crossovers and shared voice roles. Most recently, his diverse talents have seen him working on projects ranging from the adult animated web series Hazbin Hotel to The Patrick Star Show.
