In short: In the 2009 drama Nothing Personal, a young woman fleeing her past strikes an unusual bargain with a solitary widower. They agree to live together on a remote peninsula under one strict condition: no personal questions. But as their professional arrangement deepens, the boundaries between them begin to blur.

Written and directed by Urszula Antoniak, Nothing Personal follows a woman who, following a separation, hitchhikes through Ireland. She encounters Martin, a widower, and accepts his offer of shelter and food in exchange for labor. She insists on anonymity, demanding he address her only as You. Their relationship is defined by a vow of professional distance, yet it inevitably evolves through shared meals, work, and music.

The tension in their arrangement stems from the irrepressible urge to know the other. Martin eventually breaks their pact, searching her belongings to discover her identity as Anne Dijksen and visiting her Amsterdam apartment. Anne, in turn, uncovers Martin’s past through his Emergency Service Medal. When Martin reveals his intrusion by returning a hairpin from her home, the fragile trust they built is shattered, leading to a confrontation where Martin asserts his discipline by refusing her physical advances, citing his ability to know when to stop.

The film’s conclusion is marked by Martin’s sudden death, leaving Anne to inherit his home and a letter addressed to You. The narrative closes with Anne in a Spanish hotel, stripped of her luggage and her past, suggesting a cycle of isolation. Critics have noted the film's reliance on Lotte Verbeek’s performance, which Derek Elley of Variety described as full of physical grace, even while questioning the psychological depth of the character. Despite mixed critical reception, the film earned significant recognition, including the Golden Leopard for best debut at the Locarno International Film Festival and four Golden Calves at the 2009 Dutch Film Festival.
