A Hollywood star seeks lethal revenge against the photographers who destroyed his family's life.
In short: In the 2004 thriller Paparazzi, a rising action star turns the tables on a group of relentless tabloid photographers. After a staged car accident leaves his wife injured and his young son in a coma, the actor embarks on a dark, calculated mission to eliminate his tormentors one by one.
Produced by Mel Gibson and directed by Paul Abascal, the film follows Bo Laramie, a movie star whose life spirals after he is targeted by a predatory gang of four photographers. The group, led by Rex Harper, systematically harasses Laramie and his family, eventually causing a near-fatal vehicle collision. While the police investigation initially stalls due to the photographers' coordinated alibis, Laramie decides to bypass the law to exact his own form of justice.
The narrative unfolds as a series of vengeful encounters. Laramie orchestrates the deaths of his antagonists through elaborate setups, including framing one for a crime and manipulating police into shooting another. As the body count rises, the film explores themes of celebrity entitlement and the public's disdain for invasive media. Critics, however, were largely unimpressed, labeling the production a crude exploitation movie that lacked moral nuance. It was widely panned for its melodramatic tone and the questionable righteousness of its protagonist.
Despite its high-profile backing, the project struggled significantly. With a production budget of approximately US$20 million, the film grossed only US$16 million worldwide, marking it as a commercial failure. Reviews were equally harsh, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 17% approval rating from critics. Many reviewers found the film's premise—that a celebrity is justified in murdering photographers—to be both arrogant and deeply flawed, ultimately failing to provide a meaningful critique of the industry it sought to satirize.
