In short: In the 2009 film Paper Man, a failing novelist moves to a quiet beach town to conquer writer's block. He finds an unlikely companion in a local teenager, but their bond is complicated by the presence of their respective imaginary friends—a superhero and a silent observer—who shadow their every move.

Directed by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, Paper Man follows Richard, a writer who relies on Captain Excellent, an imaginary superhero, to navigate life's choices. Seeking a fresh start, Richard moves to a Long Island beach community with his wife, Claire. There, he encounters Abby, a 17-year-old who has been haunted by the loss of her twin sister, Amy. Abby carries her own imaginary friend, Christopher, who watches over her as she forms a complex, father-daughter-like connection with the older, struggling author.

The narrative explores the friction between reality and internal delusion. Richard, who struggles with the simple act of creating things with his hands, finds himself envious of Abby’s ability to perform basic tasks. As their relationship deepens, the influence of their imaginary companions begins to wane. The film, which was developed at the Sundance Filmmakers’ Labs, depicts a fragile emotional landscape where personal failures—such as Richard’s inability to reconcile his desire for a legacy with his own choice to remain childless—are laid bare during a chaotic party involving local students.

Despite its creative premise, the film faced significant criticism upon its release. Critics described the work as listless and lacking in rhythm. Aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic reflect this reception, with scores of 33% and 37% respectively. Originally intended to begin production in 2005 with Paul Giamatti in the lead, the project eventually starred Jeff Daniels, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds, with filming commencing in November 2008. While it saw limited release in 2010 and later appeared under the title Unlikely Hero in international markets, it remains a polarizing entry in independent cinema.
