How a chaotic production and a desperate script rescue created a horror box-office titan.
In short: Paranormal Activity 2 arrived in 2010 as a highly anticipated sequel, yet its path to the screen was fraught with director shuffles and a disastrous initial script. Despite these behind-the-scenes struggles, the film shattered records, proving that even a troubled production could deliver a terrifying, commercially dominant cinematic experience.
The production of Paranormal Activity 2 was defined by rapid instability. Following the success of the original, Paramount Pictures moved quickly, cycling through several potential directors including Kevin Greutert, who was pulled from the project just two weeks before filming began. By March 2010, Tod Williams was hired to direct, but the project lacked a finished script. Three weeks into production, the footage was deemed disastrous, forcing a total shutdown and the assembly of a new writers' room. It was only after Christopher Landon was brought in to overhaul the screenplay that the film found its footing.
The narrative functions as a prequel to the 2007 original, centering on the family of Kristi, the sister of the first film's protagonist, Katie. The plot explores a dark supernatural deal: a demon demands the soul of a family's first-born son in exchange for wealth or power. Because Hunter Rey was the first male born on Kristi’s side since the 1930s, he became the target of this entity. The film uses the found-footage format to document the family's escalating torment, culminating in a violent possession and a tragic conclusion that bridges the gap to the events of the first movie.
Upon its release on October 22, 2010, the film became a massive financial success, grossing $177.5 million worldwide against a $3 million budget. It set records for the biggest midnight gross for an R-rated film at $6.3 million and the largest opening for a horror movie at the time. Critical reception was mixed, with an approval rating of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. While some reviewers praised its ability to generate suspense through wide-angle, static shots, others found it failed to break new ground. Regardless, its impact was undeniable, spawning a long-running franchise that continued through 2021.
