In short: In the South Korean drama Pinocchio, a young woman with a syndrome that triggers uncontrollable hiccups whenever she lies aspires to become a reporter. Her journey becomes inextricably linked to a man hiding his true identity after a media-fueled tragedy destroyed his family, sparking a quest to expose systemic corruption.

The series centers on Ki Ha-myung, whose life is shattered in 2000 when his father, a firefighting captain, is scapegoated by the media following a fatal factory explosion. After his mother dies and his brother, Jae-myung, disappears, Ha-myung is rescued by Choi Gong-pil, an elderly man who adopts him as his own son, Choi Dal-po. Ha-myung grows up alongside Gong-pil's granddaughter, Choi In-ha, who suffers from Pinocchio syndrome—a condition that makes it physically impossible for her to lie without hiccuping.

As adults, both In-ha and Dal-po enter the cutthroat world of broadcast journalism. Dal-po seeks to clear his father's name, while In-ha attempts to prove herself to her estranged mother, Song Cha-ok, a ruthless news anchor who was responsible for the initial smear campaign against the Ki family. Their paths cross with rivals and allies, including Seo Beom-jo, a wealthy heir, and Yoon Yoo-rae, a former obsessive fan. The narrative explores the power of the media to shape public perception and the devastating consequences of sensationalism.

The show, which aired 20 episodes between 2014 and 2015, became a massive success, setting a record for the price of online broadcasting rights in China at US$280,000 per episode. By early 2015, it had accumulated over 1 billion views on the Chinese platform Youku. Beyond the central mystery, the series delves into the moral complexities of reporting, as the protagonists uncover a broader conspiracy involving news networks and corporate interests that prioritize ratings and influence over objective truth.

The production reunited key creative talent, including screenwriter Park Hye-ryun and director Jo Soo-won, who had previously collaborated on the series I Can Hear Your Voice. Through its blend of personal tragedy and professional ethics, Pinocchio challenges the audience to consider the cost of integrity in an industry where the truth is often manipulated for profit or political gain.
