Can a supernatural secret turn a jaded public defender into a hero?
In short: In the 2013 South Korean drama I Can Hear Your Voice, a cynical lawyer finds her life upended by a high schooler who can read minds. Bound by a decade-old murder trial, this unlikely pair navigates the legal system using unconventional methods to confront a vengeful killer from their past.
The series centers on Jang Hye-sung, a public defender who has abandoned her youthful idealism for a pragmatic, salary-focused existence. Her transformation is triggered by the reappearance of Park Soo-ha, a high school senior who gained the ability to read thoughts by looking into people's eyes after witnessing his father's murder. Ten years earlier, a young Hye-sung had provided the decisive testimony that sent the murderer, Min Joon-gook, to prison, despite his threats. Soo-ha, who had sworn to protect her, returns to find his childhood hero a shadow of her former self.
The narrative tension escalates when Min Joon-gook is released from his ten-year prison sentence, intent on seeking revenge against both Hye-sung and Soo-ha. As the duo works alongside Gwan-woo, a former police officer turned public defender known for his empathy and keen intelligence, they must confront the consequences of their past actions. The legal drama is further complicated by the presence of Seo Do-yeon, a high-achieving prosecutor and former high school rival of Hye-sung, who was present at the original murder but failed to testify due to fear.
Originally planned for 16 episodes, the series was extended to 18 episodes due to its significant success during its 2013 run on SBS. The show explores themes of justice, moral growth, and the weight of past trauma, as Hye-sung gradually sheds her apathy. By blending supernatural elements with courtroom procedural dynamics, the series forces its characters to look beyond the surface of the law to uncover the truth, ultimately challenging the audience to consider what it truly means to defend the innocent.
