In short: When a spacecraft crash-lands on a desert planet, survivors face a terrifying reality: an imminent eclipse will unleash nocturnal predators. To survive, they must rely on a dangerous, surgically enhanced criminal named Riddick. This 2000 film became a sleeper hit, spawning a multi-film franchise centered on its enigmatic protagonist.

Directed by David Twohy and released in 2000, Pitch Black was produced on a modest $23 million budget. The film follows the survivors of the Hunter-Gratzner, a transport ship that crashes on a sun-scorched planet. Among the survivors is Richard B. Riddick, a criminal with surgically altered eyes that grant him night vision but make him hypersensitive to light. As the group discovers that a total eclipse is approaching, they realize the planet is home to aggressive, light-fearing creatures that emerge only in darkness.

The film's development originated from a concept by David Madden, who imagined travelers on a planet of perpetual daylight facing ghosts during an eclipse. David Twohy refined this premise, replacing the ghosts with physical predators and focusing on complex character arcs. The production faced challenges, including filming in the Australian desert during winter and managing the egos of three lead actors who each believed they were the primary focus. To achieve the film's distinct visual style, the crew utilized a bleach bypass process during post-production to differentiate the planet's multiple suns.

Upon its release, Pitch Black received mixed reviews, with critics praising Vin Diesel's performance and the film's inventive visual elements while criticizing its reliance on genre cliches. Despite this, the film grossed over $53 million worldwide, establishing itself as a sleeper hit. Its success launched the Riddick franchise, which includes sequels like The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013), as well as video games and animated tie-ins. The character of Riddick has since become a staple of science fiction cinema, with a fourth installment, Riddick: Furya, announced in 2023.
