From a satirical stand-in to a sci-fi presidential spin-off
In short: How does a character designed as a cartoonish parody of real-world politics evolve into a standalone universe of interdimensional diplomacy? The journey of President Andre Curtis reveals how creators transform a satirical caricature into a complex protagonist capable of leading a staff of cyborgs and werewolves.
Wes Archer and Tom Kauffman first introduced the character in the 'Rick and Morty' 'Get Schwifty' segment, designing him as an anonymous substitute for the U.S. president of that era. Barack Obama. The persona changed notably throughout the series, receiving the family name Curtis during season five and the given name Andre by season seven. Creator Dan Harmon noted that subsequent appearances were influenced by Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, moving the character from a composite of two real presidents toward a distinct, "cartoonishly bad" persona.
In 2025, Adult Swim announced a spin-off series following the surprise appearance of Keith David at San Diego Comic-Con. The new series, premiering in July 2026, shifts the focus to Andre Curtis—a former Marine who served in Afghanistan—and his administration. Unlike the chaotic adventures of Rick and Morty, this series explores the logistical burdens of leadership, where Curtis must manage crises his nemesis avoids, such as paranormal investigations and interdimensional diplomacy.
The show distinguishes itself by building a unique world populated by diverse characters: a cyborg Chief of Staff, a half-leprechaun Secret Service agent, and a werewolf agent. While 'Rick and Morty' appears in the premiere, the creators intended for the spin-off to stand independently, comparing the relationship between the two shows to that of 'Doctor Who' and 'The X-Files.' This transition from political satire to high-concept science fiction allows for a deeper exploration of the character's perspective and the mechanics of a government facing the unexplained.
Created as a stand-in for Barack Obama in "Get Schwifty", the character received the surname Curtis in season 5 and the first name Andre in season 7. Influenced by Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and the concept of a "cartoonishly bad president", the show premiered on Adult Swim on 26 July 2026. Featuring a cyborg Chief of Staff and a half-leprechaun Secret Service agent, it achieved 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
