From nameless caricature to spin-off star: the evolution of President Curtis
In short: Originally a generic stand-in for US presidents, the abrasive and pompous President Curtis has become a cornerstone of the Rick and Morty multiverse. From fighting turkey-human soldiers to dating Rick's therapist, this character's journey from political satire to a solo series star is as chaotic as the show itself.
Wes Archer and Tom Kauffman developed the character for the 2015 "Get Schwifty" episode, originally using him as an anonymous tool for political satire. Early depictions drew inspiration from Barack Obama, but as the series progressed, the character's identity shifted. Following the 2016 election, showrunner Dan Harmon noted that writing for the third season was influenced by the concept of a "cartoonishly bad president," reflecting the perceived volatility of presidential power. His initial appearances were intended to represent both Barack Obama and Donald Trump. This satirical foundation helped shape his abrasive personality. The character's development reflects the chaotic nature of modern politics.
The character's identity has been a moving target across different realities. In one alternate dimension, the President is known as M. Romney, a nod to Mitt Romney. However, the primary version of the character was eventually given the surname Curtis during the fifth season. Voiced by Keith David, the character is defined by a humorous incompetence and a volatile relationship with Rick Sanchez, oscillating between seeking Rick's protection and attempting to have him arrested or killed. His complex dynamic with Rick often involves alternating between seeking help and attempting to arrest him. This unpredictable behaviour is a hallmark of his character. He has even been seen fighting a turkey-human hybrid.
The character's popularity has extended beyond the main series. In December 2022, Curtis was added as a playable character in the video game Pocket Mortys. His narrative reach has grown significantly, with a self-titled spin-off series announced at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2025, which is scheduled to premiere in July 2026. This evolution from a satirical archetype to a franchise lead highlights the character's enduring appeal within the animated multiverse. The character's influence spans various media, including the comic series Crisis on C-137. He also appears as a minor antagonist in other storylines. This versatility has solidified his place in the franchise.
