In short: Before high-definition CGI, a mischievous red creature and a napkin sketch changed television forever. Press Your Luck wasn't just a game of risk; it was a pioneer in computer-designed animation, introducing a comedic villain that could strip a contestant's winnings in a single, taunting flash.

Created by Bill Carruthers and Jan McCormack, Press Your Luck debuted on CBS in September 1983. While the show's core mechanic—answering trivia to earn spins on a cycling board—was a revival of the 1977 show Second Chance, its visual identity was revolutionary. The show featured the Whammy, a cartoon creature designed by animator Savage Steve Holland. Holland famously sketched the first concept on a napkin, and Carruthers personally selected him to bring the character to life.

By incorporating computer-generated visuals, Press Your Luck became a pioneering television programme that achieved a significant technological feat via the Whammy. These animations were highly popular with audiences, often featuring the Whammy taunting contestants in a style reminiscent of Wile E. Coyote cartoons. The character even became a vehicle for pop culture satire, with animations mocking figures like Boy George and Tina Turner.

The stakes were high for the players. Landing on a Whammy space would reset a contestant's accumulated cash and prizes to zero while triggering a comedic animation. This 'Whammying out' could happen up to four times before a contestant was eliminated. This blend of high-stakes gambling and early digital comedy helped the show become a staple of 1980s television, despite a notable 1984 scandal involving a contestant who memorized the board's pattern to win over $100,000.

The show's legacy continued through various revivals, including a 2002 version and a 2019 ABC primetime series. While the 2019 version introduced new mechanics like 'The Big 40' and a 'Bonus Game' with a $1,000,000 top prize, the core tension remains the same: the constant threat of the Whammy. To this day, no contestant has ever won that million-dollar top prize in the Bonus Game, with Ryan Basch coming the closest in 2020.

The show eventually faced cancellation in 1986 due to a timeslot shift intended to accommodate a revival of Card Sharks. However, its influence persisted through international adaptations in countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, as well as multiple video game adaptations spanning from 1988 to 2010.
