The Sacred Heart revival ignores the original series' ninth season entirely
In short: After years of development, the beloved medical sitcom returned to ABC in 2026. While the revival brings back the original core cast, it makes a bold creative choice: it completely disregards the events of the original show's ninth season, effectively resetting the hospital's timeline for a new era.
The 2026 revival of Scrubs, created by Bill Lawrence, officially premiered on February 25, 2026, with a nine-episode first season. This show picks up where the initial eight seasons, aired from 2001 to 2010, left off. Notably, the new series ignores the events of the original ninth season, in which the Sacred Heart Hospital was demolished, opting instead to recreate the original North Hollywood Medical Center sets to maintain continuity with the first eight seasons.
The narrative finds J.D., played by Zach Braff, returning to Sacred Heart as the new Chief of Medicine. He is appointed to the role by his predecessor, Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), who experiences severe health issues and becomes a patient at the hospital. The core trio of Braff, Sarah Chalke (as Dr. Elliot Reid), and Donald Faison (as Dr. Chris Turk) all return to their original roles, alongside recurring favorites like Judy Reyes as Nurse Carla Espinosa and Robert Maschio as Dr. Todd Quinlan.
The production faced several shifts behind the scenes. While Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra served as showrunners, Hobert departed the production in October 2025 due to creative differences, though he remains credited as an executive producer. Critics have praised the comeback; its debut season boasts a 90% Rotten Tomatoes rating from 50 reviews, averaging 7.4/10, alongside a Metacritic score of 73/100.
The series' second season, consisting of 10 episodes, premiered on September 30, 2026, following an announcement in April 2026. This season sees the promotion of Ava Bunn, who plays Dr. Samantha Tosh, to a series regular.
