Why a comedy about a lazy civil servant became Italy's biggest box office hit
In short: Released in 2016, Quo vado? shattered Italian box office records by satirizing the national obsession with the posto fisso—a guaranteed, lifetime public-sector job. The film follows a man clinging to his secure position against a government reformist determined to downsize the bureaucracy, revealing deep-seated anxieties about private-sector instability.
Directed by Gennaro Nunziante, the film stars Checco, a man who has spent his entire life enjoying the comfort of a protected government role. When a new administration, represented by the relentless Dr. Sironi, attempts to force buyouts through constructive dismissal, Checco refuses to surrender. He endures increasingly absurd and remote postings, including a stint as a hunter at an Arctic research station, all to maintain his benefits, pay, and the ability to avoid real work.
The narrative serves as a mirror for Italian society, intentionally leaning into national stereotypes and common anxieties. By depicting Checco’s blatant sexism and his reliance on bribery, the film highlights how much Italy has evolved, while simultaneously capturing the widespread fear of economic precariousness. This relatability resonated deeply with the public; even then-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi attended a screening with his family, and the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, publicly praised the film for its contribution to the national industry.
The film’s impact extended beyond the cinema. Following its release, the city of Bergen, Norway—featured as a site of cultural contrast where Checco encounters a more progressive, eco-centric way of life—saw a 23 percent increase in Italian tourism in 2016. The story’s universal appeal eventually led to a 2022 French remake titled Employee of the Month. Ultimately, the protagonist’s journey from a man defined by his job security to one who sacrifices his career for love and altruism in South Africa provides a satirical yet poignant commentary on the shifting values of modern life.
