Tracing the evolution of the world's longest-running authority on global railway industry news
In short: Railway Gazette International has been the definitive voice for rail professionals for nearly two centuries. From its origins as a 19th-century trade publication to its modern role as a global digital and print authority, the magazine has navigated a complex history of mergers, acquisitions, and technological shifts in transport.
The publication traces its lineage back to May 1835, when Effingham Wilson founded The Railway Magazine. Over the decades, it evolved through a series of strategic consolidations. By July 1905, the title Railway Gazette was established to focus on commercial and financial affairs. The publication grew significantly through the early 20th century, absorbing titles like The Railway Times in April 1914, the Railway Engineer in February 1935, and The Railway News around that same period. These mergers allowed the publication to cover the expansion of rail technology across the British Empire and beyond.
As the industry modernized, the magazine adapted its frequency and scope. In January 1964, it merged with Diesel Railway Traction, shifting from a weekly to a fortnightly schedule. By October 1970, it adopted its current name, Railway Gazette International, and moved to a monthly publication cycle. This era solidified its reputation as a vital resource for engineers, managers, and consultants in over 140 countries, providing deep insights into infrastructure, operations, and signalling.
Ownership has shifted alongside the industry it covers. After a long period under Reed Business Information, the publication moved to DVV Media Group on 1 April 2007. More recently, the group underwent further transformation when ProMedia Group UK acquired the Railway Gazette Group on 31 December 2025. By April 2026, the integration of the Europe-focused brand RailTech further expanded its reach. Today, the publication remains a cornerstone for the global rail sector, complemented by specialized digital outlets like Rail Business UK and historical precedents like the Mandarin-language Railway Gazette China.
