The Parisian magazine that served as the official antechamber to the Académie française
In short: Since 1829, the Revue des deux Mondes has stood as a titan of French intellectual life. Once a gateway for literary giants to reach the Académie française, this storied publication bridged cultures and disciplines, evolving from a travel journal into a prestigious forum for the most influential minds in history.
Founded on August 1, 1829, by Prosper Mauroy and Pierre de Ségur-Dupeyron, the Revue des deux Mondes emerged in the wake of the 1828 suspension of censorship in France. Originally titled Journal des voyages, it was acquired by the printer Auguste-Jean Auffray, who recruited his former roommate, François Buloz, to lead the editorial direction. Under Buloz, who served as editor from 1831 until 1877, the publication shifted its focus from travel to a broader scope of cultural, economic, and political commentary, aiming to connect the Old World with the New.
The magazine quickly became an elite liberal vehicle for haute culture. Its pages featured seminal works from literary luminaries including George Sand, who serialised Mauprat in 1837, and Heinrich Heine, who published his history of German emancipation in 1834. Other notable contributors included Stendhal, Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, and Hippolyte Taine. By the late 19th century, the journal's influence was so profound that writer Léon Daudet famously described it as the antechamber to the Académie française, marking it as a prerequisite for academic and literary prestige.
While the publication suspended operations in 1944, it resumed in 1948 under a modified title. Today, the magazine continues to function as a space for international debate and interdisciplinary dialogue. Now owned by the FIMALAC Group, led by Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, the Revue maintains its historical mission of fostering intellectual exchange across nations and cultures, ensuring that its legacy as a cornerstone of French thought remains relevant in the modern era.
