In short: After being pushed into a crocodile-infested river by her husband, heiress Stephanie Harper survives, undergoes plastic surgery, and returns as a glamorous supermodel to exact revenge. This Australian drama, which began as a 1983 mini-series, captivated audiences from France to Russia, spawning sequels, remakes, and a complex legacy of alternate endings.

Created by Michael Laurence, the original 1983 mini-series followed the transformation of Stephanie Harper, a frumpy heiress betrayed by her husband, Greg Marsden, and her best friend, Jilly Stewart. After surviving a brutal crocodile attack, Stephanie uses gems provided by a hermit to fund reconstructive surgery. She reemerges as the beautiful model Tara Welles, plotting to reclaim her family estate, Eden, and dismantle the lives of those who wronged her. The production, directed by Karen Arthur, was a massive success in Australia, capturing a 42% ratings share.

The show's popularity prompted a 22-part weekly series in 1986, which featured a higher budget of AUS$8 million compared to the mini-series' AUS$2.5 million. This sequel introduced new rivalries, including the vengeful Jake Sanders, brother of the late Greg Marsden. The series became a global export, finding significant audiences in France, Iraq, and Indonesia, and inspiring international remakes like the 1988 Indian film Khoon Bhari Maang and the 2014 South Korean webseries Birth of a Beauty.

The series is also remembered for its unresolved cliffhanger. The final episode originally concluded with a violent confrontation, but because Australian ratings did not justify a renewal, the ending remained ambiguous for local viewers. A five-minute resolution, which exonerated Stephanie and saw Jilly arrested, was filmed later for international markets. This revised conclusion was not included in all home media releases, leading to decades of confusion for fans until a 2021 10-disc box set finally consolidated the series with the definitive ending.
